Water Repair damage

Repairing water damage can be a very tricky business for two reasons, first of all, usually when there’s been a water leak or flood there are so many other problems than need addressing before you can even begin to attend to the issue of actually repairing the damage done to your home. Secondly, it’s often hard to tell whether repairs are worth doing at all and whether your efforts are going to pay off or not, in many cases, particularly when dealing with water damaged carpets, you don’t actually know whether your endeavours will succeed until you’ve already done them. In many ways it involves working well and then hoping for the best.

Check the source of the water

The very first step you need to take when dealing with water damage of any kind is to determine the source of the water. This is essential for two reasons, first of all in order to stop the flow of water you obviously need to know what it came from, but perhaps more importantly, you need to be able to judge what kind of water you’re dealing with. If your water heater is leaking or a pipe has burst then you’re in luck, chances are there are no significant levels of bacteria in the water which could pose a threat to your health or that of your families.

Dealing with contaminated water

On the other hand, if the banks of your local river have burst and caused a flood or a sewer has overrun then you’re dealing with contaminated water which needs to be specially treated by professionals. In the later case it is advisable that you get yourself and your family out of the house as quickly as you can and minimise any direct contact with the water.

Stop the leak

If the source of the water is coming from your own home and is a plumbing problem you will need to deal with this first, get a plumber in or try to stop the leaking water yourself if you know how. Once you’re certain the flow of water has stopped it’s time to identify which items have been damaged and remove them.

Following this you need to try and remove as much water as you can from the flooded area, a pumping system is advised to remove lots of water, in cases of relatively little amounts of flooding you might be able to get by using a mop and bucket to remove most of it. The Little Giant 5-ASP-FS 1200 GPH Submersible pump sold by Amazon.com can be perfect for a situation such as this; it retails for under $125 and even features a garden hose adapter. After you’ve removed most of the water it’s time to bring some industrial fans in, these should be set on full power to dry out the carpet and bring the humidity levels down.

Whilst the fans are working away and removing what’s left of the water you need to try and assess the damage to your furniture and judge whether they can be repaired or if they need replacing. If you begin to see any build up of mold you should throw them out immediately. The standard procedure for treating water damaged furniture is to wipe them down and dry them out, only then can you see the full extent of the damage. If you do find that the furniture does need repairing it’s best to consult a specialist water damage restoration firm which deals in such matters, contact them, give them an outline of the damage and the work that is required and they should be able to give you an accurate estimate of how much repairing water damage will cost.
