Safety lights are a great way to protect your property and deter criminal activity, the mere presence of these lights is often enough to prevent attempted robberies or even worse crimes. What’s more they are much more energy efficient than spot lights because they react to motion, they won’t be on around the clock, just when in the presence of an intruder, be they human or small animal. Of course their added benefit is that they allow home owners to take a break an get some rest and even go on holiday, safe in the knowledge that safety mechanisms are in place and that their property is adequately protected.

Interior security lighting

If you’ve decided on buying security lights you have several different varieties to choose from, the ones you eventually purchase should be based on your current and future needs and the budget you are allotted. Let’s take a look at what’s on the market.

Interior security lighting is possible, although not in the manner you might expect. If you’re going on holiday and find yourself out of town for a few days you might want security lighting within your home to give the illusion of activity to deter criminals. Such a system can be set up fairly easily, often times you can install timing mechanisms on your existing interior lights. Once it’s successfully installed and ready to go you can specify the times you wish them to go off, many people set them to go on during the evening and turn off around midnight.

Motion security lights

Motion security lights are great for warding off unwelcome intruders who get too close to your property. These outdoor security lights are fitted with sensitive motion sensors which will identify any movement within its perimeter. As mentioned at the start, these lights are great because they don’t remain on all night so they won’t waste electricity or annoy the neighbours for that matter.

Hi-Lo security lighting systems

Hi Lo security lighting systems work in much the same manner as the aforementioned models but with a slight twist. You see whilst the thought of exterior lights springing into action at the presence of an unexpected visitor may be attractive, many people prefer to have lights which are on all night long. Dusk to dawn lights are an option but many homeowners find the light levels these models emit are too high. If this sounds like you the Hi/low motion activated outdoor security lighting is for you, these lights operate at a fraction, usually 20 percent, of their full power all the way through the night, but when activated by a trespasser they switch to full power. An ingenious compromise to a classic problem.

Range is a consideration

Readers should consider the area they wish to protect when purchasing home security lighting, if your home sits on a relatively large piece of land you will need to make sure the model you buy will have the range to facilitate the extra area. Security lights cost anywhere between $20 and $150 based on the feature set and brand you require.
